Diving into Experience

Reading for me is composed of brief dives into my library, and researching for a project.

Reading the essay Movement in the Severed by Andre Lepecki, I was enthralled to learn a brief history of choreography and an analysis of the movements in the film.  I will need to read again while drawing to fully comprehend the dense analysis.  

After reading this synopsis of movement in a film, I want to see the film again with fresh eyes, being reminded (as I have experienced in the past) that to truly experience a work of art is to deconstruct the narrative, time, space, & all of the elements as an out of body experience.  The body moves through physical space while the mind manipulates (inverting, shifting, dissecting, reversing…) form, matter, concepts, and narrative.  

The deconstruction is placing a filter between my senses & consciousness that slows down time; compresses space; identifing the symbolism of site, characters, and action; and visualizing the narrative as a sculpture, inverting the negative space into visible forces and positive space as materials perverted by these forces.  This phenomenological experience allows me to enter and fully comprehend this constructed reality.  

The movement in a film represents a narrative or process, revealing the invisible layers or the conceptual puzzle is the real discovery.
